I would like some help please my bike is a Baotian BT50QT-9 Wen i bough my bike, the ignition button wasn't working (i asuemed it was because the battory was flat (which it was)) and appart from that i was happy with the condition and price of the bike. I had to kick start it for a while, so that the battory would charge. one day as i was kick starting it, the pedal unwound itself. i had a look and found that the catch which held it in place had broken off. so i tought wat the hell ill just charge the bat up, and try and use it without the kick start. so i did. but when i went to start the bike up it wouldn't turn over. it makes an electrical sound, but the engine doesnt start. what i need to know is how do i get the bike to start? (i also bought a new spark plug to see if that was the problem, but didn't make a difference. infact i am unable to see a spark at all. so please if you have the knolidge spare the time to help a student on his way..  (i will be fixing the bike myself, as i dont have cash to take it to a garage, and the garages in my area dont want to try as they havent heard of the bike before. so if possible can your explanations be to someone who is good at handywork, but not a mechanic) cheers d_spaniard |

i found this problem with my first time, try giving it some throttle whilst you attempt to start it

1. While try to start it do as the good man said twist the throttle a tad. Dont continiously do it as you WILL flood it.
2. Failin that buy a new sparkplug £2/3 max from any bike place (one plug fits all btw)
Hopefully one off thm 2 should sort ya likkle problem out!

Make sure your stand isnt causing it, even when you think the stand it fully up there sometimes is a fault with the wire. Happend with me.

i changed the spark plug, but no change.
the throttle thing ive tried that.
i also disconected the pedal, but no change.
if the motor does fllod how can you get rid of the excess?

It sounds to me like the sprocket on the starter motor is not engaging with drive for the engine, therefore the starter motor is turning, but not turning over the engine, this problem might be linked to the kick start breakage, as they both turn over the engine.
Sorry, can't help with how to check further though.

to Get rid of the excess fuel in the carb, slowly open the throttle fully, hold it there, then run the starter motor for a while, release the throttle stop the starter motor then wait a few minutes and try and start normally.
Anyway, things to do.
1. check you get a spark (remove spark plyg, hold end against the engine body, look at gap and press starter motor.
2. Make sure you are getting fuel. - remove fuel pipe from carb, see if fuel drips out (Care is needed). while pipe disconnected, remove the vacuum pipe to the fuel pump, suck on it and fuel should flow (see thread about this)
If you've got fuel and spark, then you may need to check valve clearance (there is a thread on this too)
If you've not got a spark, then the CDI unit may need checking or replacing

If the engine is not being turned over by the starter motor, (or kick start), it is not going to start until you find out why it is not being turned over. |

Sounds to me like the kick start return spring has broken and is now jamming the starter motor engaging gear.
Youn can check this by removing the left hand engine cover. It is very easy to do.

ok, i have found what is wrong with the bike. the starter moter works fine, but the part it turns (Single direction Assy) does not extend, or uncoil to turn the motor.
what should i do?
do you think its the speed, the spring, etc?

You should be able to remove it from the engine casing quite easily, and operate it by hand. You will be able to tell if the spring is ok if it retracts on it's own. Check the small teeth on both ends of the unit. Also check for free movement and oil if needed. Make sure you don't get any oil on the Drive belt or pullies!!!

i didnt find it that easy to remove, as the Drive Assy does not want to come off, even when i hold both sides if the nut.
there is movement in it, but the spring makes it coil back.
i think the spring is too tight, and is not allowing it to retract, so to therefor start the motor.
ill try oiling it.
