Oh, Also - there is a mark (T) on the cam chain wheel, for when the piston is a t TDC, but I think that the cam goes round twice for one piston revolution, so you may need to check the position of the piston, but you can tell when it's exactly TDC

Not sure if there was a problem but this is a very simple job and should be done to avoid problems such as noise(clearance too big) or running problems/burnt out valves(clearance too small)

Are they ever out by much? I find screw and locknut adjusters need more attention than bucket and shim and s & l tend to go loose where as b & s have a tendency to go tight as the valve wears into the seat before the shims/buckets and cams wear.

Tryed to check this today but left it as i dident wanna mess it up, how do you move to TDC just pull round ?

Just rotate the crank using the kick starter pedal, Aslong as both valves are closed and the piston is on its compression stroke u can then set the clearances

Just rotate the crank using the kick starter pedal, Aslong as both valves are closed and the piston is on its compression stroke u can then set the clearances Setting the clearances when the engine is at TDC is the best way, although on a single cylinder engine as long as both valves are closed and the cam shaft isn't acting upon the rockers i don't thing theres a problem

when you put the feeler gauge in should it go past the tip of the tappit or just hit the side as the tappit gos down to a point???

Oh, Also - there is a mark (T) on the cam chain wheel, for when the piston is a t TDC, but I think that the cam goes round twice for one piston revolution, so you may need to check the position of the piston, but you can tell when it's exactly TDC yer your be 180 degrees out if your on the t on the fan and the the big hole in the cam is pointing into the engine so you need the fan on t and the big hole on the cam pointing way from the motor then your at tdc plus both the rocker arms will be pritty level. still im not shure of what i asked a min go so help lol.

Great guide and something I will check when my new BT50-9 arrives on Friday #thumbs_up#
Just a couple of doobie questions;
- It's clear from the above guide, how to get to the valves, make sure the wheel is at TDC and then where the valves are to check the clearances..... but how do you actually move the valve to set the clearance? Does anything need to be unscrewed or loosened?..... or once you have the wheel at TDC and you have your gauges ready, do you just phyisically 'Pull / push' the top of the valve into the correct position ?
- What is the correct technical name for the gauges ? (I guess it's valve clearance gauges?) and can you get them in common places like Halfords ?

In the pic with feeler gauge you can see the locknut on top that needs to be slackened to allow adjustment...........

use the kickstart to turn camshaft to position tappets (TDC).......Feeler gauges can be found in Halfords probably cheaper in an independant autostore or tool shop............

Hey James, What did you use to turn that nut that adjusts the vavle? I cant get it to turn with a box wrench & don't have a socket long enough to get on it. Any suggestions would be welcomed. I have got to get back on my scoot soon or I will go crazy. Been driving my battered Ford Tempo
