My new rollers arrived today(4 Gram). The problem is that the variator nut is seriously stuck Me and my dad tried everything to try and get this nut off but it just wouldn't budge Here are my questions: which way does the nut turn to unscrew it? How have other people managed to stop the engine turning while trying to unscrew it? Any help is appreciated! Thanks

It's a standard right hand thread, turn it anti-clockwise to undo it.

I've not tried it, but in other threads they mention using an impact driver. I think the electric ones you get for around £15 that you plug into a car lighter sockets will work.

Have you had a look at the electronic manual, they have an adjustable 'Y' piece tool on there, the ends of the top of the Y have short bolts on which engage in any available holes to hold the variator whilst pressure is put on the nut. This sort of tool should be easy enough to make up if not readily available at an accessory shop.

An impact driver is most likely the easiest way!
The "Y" shaped tool appears to only be used on the clutch part of the transmission!

I had exactly the same problem! It does turn anti clockwise, and it is flippin hard. I stopped the engine from turning by removing the fan cover from the other side of the engine, removing the fan from the top of the flywheel, and using a strip of steel with holes drilled in it, I bolted the flywheel to the engine casing. You MUST be careful not to use too long a bolt on the flywheel or you WILL damage the generator. I used big washers to space the bolt out. You can leave this in place while you change the rollers, as it's handy for when it comes to tightening the nut back up again!

Its Bad Day For My Taishan! :'(The nut decided it didn't want to come off We have broken the woodruff key(the thing which slots in between the crank shaft and the magneto's round metal thing). The nut was too tight, the woodruff key couldn't handle the high amounts of torque being put onto it, so it sheared in half Its best if when you are trying to undo the variator bolt do not hold the engine by the magneto bit! Use a impact wrench!

Is it beyond repair or a big job?

Hopefully my dad might be able to find a new woodruff key at his work!
if he does find a new one then everything is ok. But if he doesnt then i think its bye bye taishan....... unless of course we use super glue hehe lol

Surely a new key can be found from somewhere? Ask at a local garage....

Thats an odd thing to happen!
The manual itself suggests holding the flywheel to undo the flywheel nut, and the pulley nut. When you look in the manual it doesn't show the woodruff key you mention. What does one look like?
If the 'key' is strong enough to withstand the torque of the engine (@3bhp) it should be strong enough to withstand the torque you were able to provide (@2 man power!).
Let me have a pic of the broken part, and dimensions etc. and I will have my father-in-law look at his work, He works for a railway engineering firm who work on train axles and wheels!

Yeeee! Problem fixed! My dad had a few woodruff keys lying around at his work(electrician). The top piece of metal is a brand new woodruff key!(slightly bigger than the ones in the taishans). he had to grind the new one down to make it fit properly. The bottom pieces of metal are the broken woodruff key! As you can see its been sheared in half! Remember when your putting all that pressure on the variator nut trying to undo it, its that tiny piece of metal supporting the load on the other side where the magneto is!
