Manufacturer's and designers spend a great many hours in design and development of the products they intend to put onto the market these days. They have to abide by certain rules and regulations especially where safety is concerned. Years ago, especially in racing teams it was realised that in the event of accidents petrol spilt onto hot engines causing fires. People forget that Nicki Lauda was involved in a horrific accident that left him scarred for life. He still returned to F1 despite his injuries. It was as a result of this that design engineers paid more attention to stop similar accidents happening again. Not that a moped has these safety design features installed on most bikes because of the cost. However, most manufacturer's do carry out testing of their products before releasing it onto the open market. Having said that, they the manufacturer would endevour to ensure their products were safe before finally releasing them. As regards petrol being safe in the tank on a bike, its far safer than in a can. Simply because it was designed to hold petrol. only a stupid twit is going to use a match to see how much petrol is left in the tank, which would result in a fire. Or should the actual bike catch fire, which is an exremely rare occurance that the petrol insode the tank could explode up[on reaching a certain tempreture. Therefore the answer to your question is plain and simple, the petrol in a tank is only as safe as the person who owns the bike and takes pride in his own safety.

Hang on I don't plan to carry it under the seat all the time, just from the petrol station to my house, then store it in my shed to save to many visits to fill up the scoot.

depends how far the garage is, how long it takes you and remember its your life your decision. If that was my bike, and it sure looks good, I'd get myself a top box. They come in handy for other things too. I think you have a little platform at the back of your bike where you would fit a top box. Can you not secure a one gallon can to that. It would be more desireable to have the petrol out in the open than under a seat in a hot spot.
