Licence requirements
Under 17 years old
You can ride a moped (50cc or less) from 16 years old with a compulsory basic training (CBT) licence and a provisional moped licence. You must show L-plates and cannot carry passengers. 50cc bikes are restricted to go no faster than 30mph. Please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information.
Hold a full UK car drivers licence - passed after the 1st February 2001?
With a full UK car drivers licence you can ride a bike of up to 50cc without L-Plates and carry a pillion passenger. However a CBT is required. Please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information.
If you wish to ride a bike up to 125cc you will require a CBT, please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information. It is required that you use an L-Plate on completion. You will not be able to carry a pillion until you complete the next stage of the test. CBT is valid for 2 years and is required to do a full motorcycle test.
For bikes above 125cc you will require a full bike licence please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information.

If you are over 21 years old, you can take a direct access test which if passed allows you to ride unlimited cc motorcycles.
