Has anyone sussed out the correct operation of the auto-choke unit.My Beast from the East tries to stall when cold after only 100yds(its not much better when hot,but thats another story).I`ve taken the choke unit off the carb and the pin appears to be fully extended, but dont know if this is right or wrong.Any help would be appreciated.

It sounds like its working correctly, but im not sure You might wanna try and re-adjust the idle fuel mixture by setting that flat headed brass screw to 2 turns out from in. Hope this helps

Listen to the engine when you start it and it is cold. You should hear a change in the sound after 0,5-3 minutes. It sounds less after the choke turns off. The choke lets more fuel through when it is turned on, this makes the engine sound sligtly more.
There is no universal setting for this screw. Every carburator and engine has it's own personality. They really differ (chinese quality). Starting from two turns out like hypojam sugests is a good startingpoint though.

I think it's best to wait at least a minute or so when it's being started in the cold. That way it'll idle right like it's supposed to.

I still think that the best thing is to drive slowly the first minute. I think it's better than just idle. When driving the the engine gets warm faster.

The Auto choke works like this.
It's electrically controlled, when there is no voltage applied the pin is fully retracted. This is the position when you first start the bike. As soon as voltage is applied to the choke, the pin starts to extend. It takes around 5 mins to extend fully. When fully extended it cuts off the flow of extra fuel into the carb. All the time there is voltage applied it keeps the choke closed. When you switch off the bike, the voltage is removed, and the pin retracts.
When the pin is retracted it allows more fuel into the carb, this makes it easier to start from cold.
The pin extends only about 1 cm.
Hope this helps clear up a few problems
