Hi.. I've got a bt50qt-11, it's been fine the past couple of days. snipped the pink wire, all fine, took out the brass screw, all fine, couldn't adjust the needle cos it didn't have any notches and just a fixed washer at the top. Bike still did 35mph on the flat, better than the previous 25mph. Didn't want to run at all yesterday so I put the brass screw back in and it was fine, albeit slow again. left work today and the bike just would not start at all. spent hours trying to start it, but nothing. nothing from kick start or electric. it did start once, but there was just no power there, even at full throttle the bike wouldn't budge. any ideas?

the only advise i can give you is to check the fuel, you would be surprised how many people do that , and check the wiring as the connections can become lose the connections are under the front cover) also try connecting the pink wire again

It sounds like your valves may need adjusting. Can you describe anything else? How old is the scooter?

valves? It's only about 3 weeks old. I've only just got it registered and done about 25 miles on it. I tried re-connecting the pink wire, but nothing's changed. I checked all other connections and I can't see anything wrong. I filled it with petrol the other day and it wouldn't start, so had to wheel it back to work. Put the brass screw back in the next day and it was fine, until I got about a mile up the road and it just died on me. the needle in my carb is smooth, without notches and just one fixed washer at the top. Someone suggested putting on a really tight washer just below the fixed one as it would allow for fuel in, and will probably start, but I'm not sure as I didn't touch this in the first place. the bike now is in the same state as when I got it. brass screw present and pink wire re connected.

Check the valve gaps! sounds like your losing compression!

yeah, if my valve gaps were just a little bit off, it would take 15 minutes to start it, and when it started it would have no power and die after running about a minute.
A valve gap feeler guage can be bought at any auto store (in the US) for about $3. All you need is that an adjustable wrench, a 10mm socket, and a phillips head screwdriver!
It's easiest to get to the valves if you take your seat and seat support right off. It is held on by 4 10mm nuts and two phillips head screws. I know this, because I had to adjust my valves without a feeler guage, and it took many tries to get it right! It only takes me 15 minutes to do now, but they took a lot of adjusting after I put the 80cc kit in.

Before you check the valve gaps, check the simple things first....
Have you got a good spark at the spark plug? This will rule out any electrical problems.
Is there fuel getting to the carb?
Does it feel like you have good compression when you push the kick starter down? If yes then your valve gaps are probably ok.
Good luck!
Dave.

The compression will be hard to tell from the kick start. When my valves were bad it kicked over exactly the same as when they were good. There are cheap tools called compression testers that go into the sparkplug hole to accurately tell your compression. I've been meaning to get one for a while now!

Ok Thanx. Weird thogh cos after 3 days of nothing, my scooter started first time today and I managed to get it home, albeit at 20mph. Think it'd be a good idea to have a mechanic have a good look at the whole bike tomorrow. rear brake light's always on too! Thanks for all your suggestions.

duuh...it's fixed. the needle in the carb, well there's like a white clip that sits on top, or summat? well it shoulda been underneath, or maybe other way round. Whatever it was it was put in wrong way round, and basically flooding the engine. i dunno..technical stuff but literally, a 2 second job. ;D
