Can anyone help, i've a squeeky front brake and dont know how to fix it. I was told by the biker nuts in my work it's bedding in but i've now done 250k and its getting worse, not sure if I should take it to a wee garage, its only a disk brake after all, anyone any ideas?

My front drum brake squeaks like mad for the first few presses of the lever, a local garage said there's nothing I can do. He also hinted that all cheap scooters do it.

The squeeling noise that you may get on breaking is the breakpad vibrating within the brake calliper.
If it is a disk brake then it will need a little copper grease on the BACK ( thats the BACK and not the part that touches the disk) of the brake pad between the pad and the calliper.
Not sure what to advise for drum brakes im afraid

With a car you just take the wheel off and put some copper grease on. I'd go with Rusty's suggestion.

Thanks will give it a go tomorrow, along with the first oil change....argh, i'll prob get run over coz my scoot lives in the street with a close relationship to a lamppost. Might try derestriction next week, an extra few mph will help now i'm used to the mad buses. Will let you know how i get on.

You can't go wrong changing the oil, if in doubt just follow the guide in the Hints, Tips & DIY section. As for derestriction - God you're brave!! I tried it on mine and the bike wouldn't start so I put everything back how it was.

Hallo
Well oil change was a complete sucess...followed the hints, tips & DIY section like you said. As for the squeeky break..........aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh, dont mess with these things if you're not 100% sure what you're doing!!!!! It took me 20 mins to get it apart, sand down the brake pads, clean it all, and nearly 2 hrs to put it back together, only then did i manage it after I stopped some poor motorbiker in the passing and ask for help, luckily he was a bike mechanic or i'm sure i'd still be there when it got dark tonight! I'd live with the squeek but at least mine has gone for now :-)

I think that drum brakes squeak when there is a build up of brake dust in them, Probably best to open them up, pour out the dust (DONT BREATH IT - IT MAY BE ASBESTOS BASED), wipe out the drum with a CLEAN rag - perhaps get a brake cleaning spray. Then reassemble.
This is going by what I'd do on a car!!
