hello everyone, i came across this site last night as i just won a taishan z2 on ebay, i picked it up this morning and have been trying to find out its problems ( it has a few!) first, the ignition wont work, it takes ages to start using the kick start, the headlights wont come on. once it loses the revs it stalls/cuts out. the guy i brought it from thought it was a 2 stroke so had mixed oil with the petrol, he says he hadnt used it since buying it in april. it's only 3 years old, has no tax or M O T. are all the faults above going to be impossible to sort out, and does anyone know any good sites/dealers of spare parts? thanks in advance. jane

hi jane,
if your scoot is starting, you'll be able to sort any other problems through help here
your lack of lights could be as simple as a loose connector
losing revs, possibly just idle screw needing adjusted
probably could do with an oil change/fresh(good) sparkplug (how many kms on the clock?)
tappets might need doing?
you've probably got some reading to do, there's plenty of good (and bad) info within the site, let us know how you go..............

Hello! Your lights will NOT turn on unless the engine is on. More than likely your battery is dead. If it has been sitting for awhile-I would take a look at your carb. That can cause the other problems you describe. Your low speed jet may be clogged. I have had that happen & had similar problems with starting & stalling. Good luck!

thanks for your advice guys, dont finish work til it starts getting dark, but had a quick look, and it seems theres no oil at all in the engine for a start off!. also wanted to put oil in the transistor, as the pics on here, but my wheels dont have any nuts, so not really sure what to do. on wednesday/thursday when i have more time i plan on emptying out the old petrol, last owner mixed it with oil? thinking it was 2 stroke, also want to check battery, carb and bulbs, as indercators work, but not headlight. guy said he had fitted new battery, but guess it could do with a overnight charge?
well let you know if all this helps. cheers.

on wednesday/thursday when i have more time i plan on emptying out the old petrol, last owner mixed it with oil? thinking it was 2 stroke, I don't know if this helps at all but my friend put diesel in her petrol car a few months ago (no it wasn't me!) and the garage used some flushing stuff in the petrol to get rid of oil in the jets(?) as well as emptying all the contaminated fuel out. Is this your scooter Jane?

update on my scoot, i knew it wouldn't be plain sailing but.. ok found out it's a 2 stroke! that was a bit of a surprise, also its been hammered. it's been took to bits and put back together again, the kick start has been welded on, so guess theres been a few problems with it, but my biggest obstacle is the alternator. we removed the fan cowling and fan, then we could see small pieces of wire, they fell on the floor these seem to come from the rotor..? haven't got a puller so couldn't remove the rotor from the shaft, but in with the tiny bits of broken coil/wire there were 2 silver bits, rather like a nail or bolt..... me thinks maybe the bolts that held it in place have snapped and fallen inside, breaking the coils of wire inside.? so now i need to buy a puller that will remover the rotor so i can see the damage inside, know i will have to buy a new alternator, but would like to find out how it got damaged to prevent it happening again. cant sort out the other problems until i can get it running, hope delivery isn't too long, cant wait to get on the road.

hi, well got the magneto from partsforscooters.com, took 9 days as was shipped from usa. fitted it on, was easy but still wouldnt work, during kickstart it sounded like it wasnt catching, and there was a gurgling noise! the spark plug didnt seem to get wet at all, was going to give up until this morning and tried kickstarting a few more times. eventually it started! kept cutting out when you let go of the throttle, but with a bit of tuning it idled! yipeee! found the gasket between the carb and engine broke ,letting in air,so mended that with some gasket mender stuff.the headlight does come on now, but the brake light only works when the rear brake is on, is this right? shouldnt it come on which ever brake is on? also, its a 2 stroke, so i need to add the oil to the petrol before filling the tank, question is how much oil to 1 litre of petrol? thanks for any help, hopefully gonna put it in for a MOT at the end of the week. p.s. brought some exhaust paint for touching up the rust bits as advised in this forum. wouldnt have got this far without you, thanks.

but the brake light only works when the rear brake is on, is this right? shouldnt it come on which ever brake is on? It could be that you have a wire detached at the front (right) brake lever light switch. Or the switch is faulty. Get a Honda(or similar) one to replace it also, its a 2 stroke, so i need to add the oil to the petrol before filling the tank, question is how much oil to 1 litre of petrol? I'm surprised you have to add oil to the petrol, isn't there a separate oil tank to put 2stroke oil into? If there isnt, then use 100cc to 1 gallon (2percent mix) That's what I put into my Bajaj, and most of my Lambretta mates do th same.
