Is this a left or right handed thread. clockwise to tighten and counter clockwize to loosen ?

It's a standard right hand thread. Many will tell you you need an impact wrench, but mine came off with mole grips & a decent socket.
Some nuts on the bike are ridiculously tight, others stupidly loose, probably depends on the peasant who put the bike together.
If you do use mole grips, keep them close to the edge so you don't bruise the running surface of the variator. Good luck!

My opinion is to make sure the nut is at least tight when its put back on i'd got with an impact wrench
Also so that the head of the nut is not damaged or worse

I tried the alternative method using wood blocks and a screwdriver in the starter gearwheel, and wish I'd waited for my impact driver. Several bloodied fingers, and the screwdriver slipped and dented the weird little springy thing on the single director so that it didn't spring anymore, so I had to take that apart and reshape the bent bit (incredible faff!)
