Yeah you do have to clean the oil filter.
You are best cleaning the oil filter when you change the oil. Cleaning the filter is easy. When you remove the oil drain plug, the filter comes out with it. The little cage thing is the filter. Just wash it in very hot soapy water, but make sure its properly dry before you put it back in the bike.
Job done. Just do it again at the next oil change

If you have lost the metal oil filter it should be ok . Just make sure you dont get any grit in the oil system Other wise things could start too fook up big time

So next time u change the oil once all the oil has drained out of the hole, if the filter still hasnt fallen out stick ya finger up the hole and just budge it a bit If still nothing comes out i guess you have lost it

Don't panic chap just put it back in there now, be quick or you'll lose a lot of oil. Once it's back in just top the oil up again.
