just doing my first service on my biotian bt125t-9 and not sure which gear oil too use! in manual that came with bike it says use SAE 90, but on casing theres a label that says use SAE40! rang a few bike shops and they don't stock 40 , but some said that with a scooter you can use engine oil totally confused now, so please help

The SAE 90 is probably the gear oil you need, and 10-40 oil for the engine. I 'think' SAE 90 is the same viscosity as 10w/40w oil, so in theory, 10w/40w oil could be used as gear oil, but SAE 90 seems to have different properties to 10w/40w oil, (apparently it doesn't 'thin' so much). Some oils state they are suitable for both jobs, so to be safe, use SAE 90 for the gears, and 10w/40w for the engine, though I used 10w/40w for both the engine and gears, but I will change the 10w/40w in the gears to SAE 90 at the next oil change (1,000km) Can't see why you are confused

Seems simple enough to me. I used engine oil for my transmission, good old Halfords 10w/40, four stroke mineral oil.

I've got the same bike BT 125 T-9 and I used gear oil. (the 90 stuff).
the old stuff that came out was very similar to what I put in.
I certainly wouldn't put in SAE40 or Engine oil, you need a bit of thickness to the oil to protect the gears.
I bought the stuff from Asda for about 3 quid for 1/2 litre, thats about enough for 4 and a bit refills.

500ml in the transmission? That's way too much, only about 100ml is needed.

If you put over 110 ml in the gear box, through the correct filler bolt hole, the excess runs out, when it stops running out, you put the bolt back in and you have the correct amount of oil.
If you over fill the engine, the excess oil usually burns off and gives clouds of smoke through the exhaust. But it is really not very good for the engine long term, so, if you think you have overfilled it, take off the sump nut, drain some of the oil (or drain it all and put some new stuff in) and check it on the dipstick.

I filled it in through a a hole which appeared whilst taking a nut with a flat bottom bit by the back wheel. I am suspecting i have filled up something else and so my gear oil thing hasnt got any oil in. I would take a photo but as you might of read from prev posts this is impossible.
