Problem was...bike would start ok but after runing for about 30 secs it would lose all power and cut out (bike was only 6 months old, done 1000 miles). I suspected a problem with the carb as I knew the bike had been stood for some time.
To cut a long story short, I had the carb off a number of times, cleaned out, checked float height, checked fuel supply to carb, etc, etc. But fault remained the same.
In the end I checked the valve clearances, the inlet valve was ok but the exhaust valve had no clearance with the engine hot or cold. I reset the clearance to 0.05mm as stated in the manual.
As soon as I started it back up I knew it was fixed, it sounded crisp and the throttle response was much better. With no clearance on the exhaust valve I think it must have been holding the valve open slightly and giving me all the problems.
If anyone needs any help drop me a line.

When you check valve clearances, where is the 'Gap' that you are checking? is it between the rocker arm and the valve top? Also how do you alter the gap?

Yes exactly, check between the rocker arm and the top of the valve stem, engine MUST be cold. Gap should be 0.05mm, checked using feeler gauges. There is a lock nut to loosen then adjust gap and then re-tighten lock nut, check gap again after.
IMPORTANT - Make sure that the cam lobe is opposite the rocker arm before checking the gap, i.e. rocker arm is at its lowest position.
VERY IMPORTANT ----- If you're not 100% sure of how to do this, ask a mechanic. If you get it wrong you could do a lot of DAMAGE such as bent valves, etc........
Regards, Dave.
