The 10w40 relates to the general temperature of the country in which the oil is used (I think). 10w40 oil is supposed to be OK in temperatures of minus 10C, to plus 40C, so it should easily cover the teperature ranges in the UK. 10w30 should also be OK, as usual, the user manual seems to have slightly mixed up these figures.

I put Halfords finest into my Taishan. It's 4 stroke, 10w/40 mineral oil.

I think the way to go is just as Hypojam said, Buy the most expensive oil there is, after all it doesn't use much so doesn't work out too bad. Don't forget a 5 litre can will do 6 oil changes, and at 3000Km per change, it will last for years!!
So when you think it may be £20 or more for the oil, but it will last you 2 or 3 years, it's not a lot to spend to get the very best protection for your hard working engine!
I sound like an Oil salesman!!!
