Aren't Taishan Commuters 3 bhp? I doubt if there's much difference to be honest between the power output of a Chinese scooter and any other brand.

I'd say that restricted they probably put out about 3hp, derestricted probably 4-5 depending on whether you get a good one:).

Quick and easy- probably not. I only found out these scooters existed a couple of days ago, and while I'd love to get my hands on one and try and tune it up I don't have the money right now. If you know what you're doing you could advance the ignition timing a couple of degrees, and refit your freeflow filter, this time raising the carb needle a couple of notches to get more fuel in along with the extra air. Whether you'd call that quick and easy depends on your level of mechanical experience really. TBH though I would have been chuffed with a moped that could consistently go over 40mph when I was riding as a teenager!

Talking about the carb needle there isnt anyway of moving the washer thingy on it. It appears to be stuck

If you grip it with a pair of pliers, you can pull it off. But be careful to hold the pin close to the clip when you pull it off or you will bend the pin like i did, fortunately i managed to straighten it.

I think the 2.2Kw = 3 bhp is the maximum allowed for moped type ecc status.
However a moderatly tuned 4 stroke bike engine will produce 1 bhp per 10 cc's so we should expect 5 bhp minimum from a de-restricted bike.
To get this to the back wheel might need better gearing though as the bike might get to it's rev limit before its able to get the power onto the road.
I think the Aprilla 50cc bikes can get their power output to between 10 / 20 Hp but they are 2 stroke. I tried phoning them to ask as they do not put power output on their web site but they will not tell me!
I know 80 / 95 Mph is claimed on some racing style 50cc bikes. Engine life is measured in seconds though! ;-) re-bore anyone???

Yer a fully tuned 2 stroke 50 like the nrg, zip, sr, aerox etc
They can easily make 20bhp+ when tuned to the nuts.
If you just tune one with just bolt on parts ie, better exhaust, borekit, gear up, bigger carb, reedblock you can see one pushing out around 12-13bhp.

Talking about the carb needle there isnt anyway of moving the washer thingy on it. It appears to be stuck If there are notches further down the needle than the one the washer is on, then it's designed to be removed. They do require a fair amount of force though. I used to find a flat surface and then push down on the needle either side of the washer so that it popped off (using a big pair of pliers)- making sure that it didn't ping off into a pile of junk never to be seen again . To get more fuel into the mixture- which is what you'll need with a freer flowing filter- you move the washer further down the needle so that it sits higher up in the jet thing (long time since I last took a carb apart, sorry if that's vague or wrong : .
