I've just gone outside to change the transmission oil on my Taishan Commuter, I changed the engine oil about a week ago. When I undid the draining bolt for the transmission oil loads of fairly clean oil poured out, in the end I put the bolt back in to stop it. I'm guessing that the transmission gets all of its oil from the engine? When I poured some oil into where the transmission oil goes (see my topic in the Hints, Tips & DIY section) I only put a few drops in - hardly anything really but like I said when I undid the draining bolt loads poured out until I put the bolt back in. So what is the purpose of putting transmission oil in that little hole???

On my Boatian qt-9 i need to use seperate gear oil and engine oil as per the manual supplied, each one has its own fill and drain holes.

Oh right. Well it seems that Taishans (well my one at least) seem to get their transmission oil straight from the engine so I still don't understand why they tell you to add transmission oil unless it's just to grease a few parts up?

The oil you are talking about is the final drive oil, its just there to keep a couple of cogs lubricated, its separate from the engine and only needs its oil changing once every 1000 miles

So how did it get in there if I didn't put it there and as loads of it poured out earlier do I need to top it back up?

If you dont have any oil in the final drive section then something is probaly gonna break

110ml's approx should come out of the final drive draining bolt

Probably a stupid question this but would the transmission oil make any difference to the performance of the bike as there's a slight hill on the way home and usually my Taishan used to crawl up the hill at around 20mph but after adding some clean oil to the transmission yesterday I flew up the hill at about 27mph.
Coincidence or not???

I don't think there would be any noticeable performance difference, maybe the wind was behind u that day

i got home from work on thursday of last week and herd something grinding i thought it mite of been the front breaks but i got off and it wasn't i spun the back wheel roung a couple of time and it was coming from the drive cogs i wasn't sure what kind of oil to us and have tried and tried but havn't had any luck finiding out so do any of you guys know? i drained it before as i thought i had to before taking the belt casing off because it had a gasket but realised and put it back in. im STUCK. :-( can someone help?

Just use your normal 10w/40 engine oil, you can buy proper transmission oil but it's not really necessary.

but when i drained it the last time it was a really thick oil and it was a light grey kinda colour would 10w/40 do?
