The General Scooter Chat section was becoming packed with topics about derestriction and other engine questions, I'm not complaining as this forum has taken off a lot better than I expected!! I thought to make life a little easier I'd start this new section so that if you have a problem hopefully the answer will be in here - if not then this will be the place to ask. Post away folks!!

Hi All
Some info on de-restricting the taishan commuter scooter, this is for 2005 models with model number ts50qt-4. The restriction is in the carberattor, remove the black cap held by 2 brass screws, you will see beneath the cap a plastic nipple and screw, remove the screw, also you will see a large thick rubber washer, this needs to be removed as well. That is the only restriction placed on this model of scooter, there is no pink wire fix, no variator washer on the drive wheel ect, this info from taishun uk! Please note this information is given for information only, as riding a de-restricted scooter on moped insurence is illegal as you are no doubt aware, therefore this had to be said.
Change your gearbox oil and engine oil for a good quality branded oil as well.
If your scooter has the teardrop orange light on the front of the scooter, remove the lenses and put a small amount of bathroom silicone sealer around the lenses as they will fill up with water and cause electrical problems over time, you have been warned.
There is a small design fault on these scooters, the conveluted pipework that fits to the air box has a tendancy to kink at the airbox inlet, this restricts the flow of air to the airbox, which in tunr restricts the air to the carberettor, i have inserted a small piece of plastic piping into the tube which has cured the restriction problem, this in turn has increased my speed somewhat, check for this as well before de-restricting your scooter.
Another problem on this scooter is that the variator drive belt is too thick in the newer models, the cross sectional area of the belt is therefore wider, this gives a slower top end speed on the scooter, again this info from the importer, at present there is no replacment belt in production.
There have been a few problems with the carberettors as well, i will be exchanging mine next week as i have found a small problem on mine with the jetting.
Another thing that can be checked is the valve clearence settings, some have been found to be incorrect.

Thanks for all that info Paul. I'll definitely be trying out some of your suggestions later on. I hear what you're saying about water in the front lights as everytime my scooter goes out in the rain I have to take the plastic lense off and get all the water out using some kitchen roll. If I put some sealant around the edge of the lense how do I then change the bulbs or do I cross that bridge when I come to it?

silicone sealer will create a rubbery water tight seal around the fitting. It will simply pull apart when you take the lens off again.

It sticks tiles to a wall pretty well though. I'll give it a try at the weekend, my dad has loads of the stuff but he lives 8 miles away and I can't be bothered riding that far after work. I've got some No More Nails but that dries way too hard & brittle.
