I have a lowish mileage Taishan 50 and the problems i am having are :- Will not start unless using the kick start. Electric start working fine but the engine will not fire unless kicked off. The scoot is also running quite poor in that the engine seems to be 'hunting' and holding back. Not sure if the two problems are related. I have stripped and cleaned out the carb, changed spark plug, set valve clearances, cleaned out fuel and air filter, fitted new suppressor cap. Any help or ideas would be appreciated as i am ready for skipping the dam thing.

kick start - 1st thing to try sounds like the battery is low and needs a good charge, if it still wont start when the battery is full then you may have a weak electric starter if it does start then
it could be the battery was never charged up enough
or 2ndly there is a loose connection etc so power is not getting fed back into the battery from the generator
holding back sounds like rollers to me get lighter 5 gram

Have had lighter rollers fitted a while back. The holding back is intermittant and feels a little bit like it is lurching then hasitating.

if they fitted cheapo rollers they could be worn out

Macrofeet - would the rollers cause cause it to run so badly?. I thought they just improved performance/acceleration.

I have also noticed that the spark seems to be quite poor even tho it is a new plug..

had some cheapo rollers off scooter assasins they wore out really quick(flat spots)
it does affect speed and accel
if you think you got a weak spark my advice would be to test your coil

I have adjusted the mixture many times without success. The rollers could be worn. How do you check the coil Macrofeet? Ta

I once had exactly these symptoms on a Honda C90. It turned out that a previous owner had reassembled the advance/retard mechanism incorrectly, jamming it. In your case I would suspect the CDI unit.

1st thing to do is check for a weak spark But I would get the CDI checked

I have just got the Scoot back from a local garage who could not find the fault $%£%£.... As stated before it will start ok on the kick start but not on the electric start which is working fine just will not fire unless using the kick start. I am still not sure whether i have two seperate faults or they are related but the other fault i have is - When running seems to build up speed reasonably well up to about 20 mph then gets sluggish and has a slight 'jurky' feel to the acceleration. It will then only build up speed when going downhill on the flat it will labour for ages. I have - Set the Valve clearences . changed the Spark Plug to NGK. Changed suppressor cap. Cleaned out the Carb. Set mixture. Checked transmission. Checked all pipework and fuel lines/filters. Oil change. Visually checked wiring and blown out any moisture. Checked what appears to be a weak spark- but have been advised that they have a weak spark anyway- (Comments please !!!) . The only thing i can think now is could it be the Cdi or Coil?, but do not want to buy unless sure which one or both to buy. What is the best way of checking either and has anybody any spares?. I may have been repeating myself in peviouse threads but i an really getting fed up with this problem and i am thinking of skipping the dam thing if i cannot sort it out. Thanks anyone for reading and any usefull seggestions would be gratefully appreciated. Thanks in anticipation.

Could be bad or old gas. Drain it and put in fresh Shell premium high octane, add 1/2 oz 100% pure alcohol (get at paint store) don't use rubbing alcohol. The alcohol will absorbe water in the tank. run for 10 minutes then drain tank. put in fresh gas. Install a racing CDI will help too. Buy a "battery tender" and hook it up to the battery so you can plug it in at night. In the morning the battery will be fully charged and you should be able to start it easily.

I have just spent most of Sunday afternoon on the Scoot and believe i have found the long standing problem. I fitted a new coil and lead unit and it is a different scoot now. The spark was only slightly stronger when the new coil fitted but it made a hell of a difference. So anyone who has the same fault do not believe that the coil is ok if a spark is there. The difference i noticed that the spark had a irregular pattern and not a positive arc. So thanks so much to everyone who helped in this long standing problem and thanks to the Forum organisers - Cheers - One hell of a Forum A++++++++++++++++
