On my Baotian BT50-QT9, I have this silver box on the exhaust. The pipe with the spring round it goes to the air inlet on the air filter. Does anyone know what this is, and does it in any way restrict the engine. The service manual (downloaded from link on this forum) does not show this component. Please Help....

I have one of these on mine, and at a very rough guess, I would imagine it would be a way of feeding warm air from the exhaust, back to the carb, so a sort of turbo charger, or part of the automatic choke.

I reckon it's an Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve, if it feeds into the air intake system. If so, it probably isn't restricting the engine much, if at all, and it's designed to reduce emissions. It's not anything like a turbo though, I doubt it improves performance.
If the pipe actually goes to the carb it could just possibly be some sort of carb heater. Sorry if I'm teaching granny to suck eggs, but carbs are colder than the surrounding air thanks to the lower pressures in them, and on cold days ice can form inside them making the bike run very rough. If it turns out to be a carb heater, you could probably disconnect it during the summer which might improve performance a smidge.

Thanks 'rave' I think it's probably an EGR valve, as it goes directly to the air intake hose. Didn't think they would go to the bother of putting somthing like this on a cheap chinese scooter, But I suppose it's so it meets EC regs.
Thanks again

It's basically to reduce emissions from the exhaust.
