A big thanks to Fruitman for this guide. This might work on Taishans if anyone cares to give it a try? Here are a few pics to help along all you Boatian owners gagging to derestrict their scooters. These are all tips I've gathered up from other sites and decided to have a go myself, and it worked ok. First the pink wire trick. (Cut the pink wire and seal with electrical tape)Now undo the cover under the seat to reveal the carb. Now undo the two screws and lift off the black cover and unscrew the brass screw on the underside of this cover and remove. Now take out the long spring and lift out the rubber cover which contains the long thin pin that you have to adjust. Pull off the small clip washer at the end of the pin and push back onto the third groove down (middle) Thats all there is to it.......

The only trouble is with de-restricting 50cc scooter and riding on a car licence is technically your not insured now.

I guess I should write a little bit about the law for those not in the know: If you derestrict your scooter you are in fact turning it into a motorcycle which is all well & good as long as you have the correct license i.e passed your CBT. There is nothing against the law about derestricting a scooter but remember if you haven't got the correct license your insurance will be void plus you could end up with points & a fine from the plod. The choice is yours!!

Plus you'll have to have a numberplate light fitted.

If I get one I'll wait till it is run-in then derestrict it and take the chance that no-one will notice!

OK if you snip the pink wire on a Baotain, what wire do you snip on a taishan. As I heard that sniping pink wire causes the scooter to not start. Any know?

I know Hypojam snipped the pink wire on his Taishan which stopped the bike from working but maybe you have to do all the parts i.e cut the pink wire then undo the carb cover and remove the washer. Just cutting the wire on it's own is probably asking for trouble. I guess the best way is to cut the pink wire, do the rest of the job and if you don't get any joy just connect the pink wire again.

Welcome aboard Bigland. If your ped does 40mph without derestriction you're very lucky.

Derestriction makes your scooter do about 45mph so to be honest I wouldn't bother.

If you derestrict your scooter you will have to tell the insurance company plus you'll need to have a numberplate light fitted as you're turning a moped into a motorcycle.

My Baotian has a number plate light. I think they all do. There is a clear section under the tail light that lights the number plate. It was the same as this on my Honda a few years ago.
Anyway, if you de-restrict and tell your insurance company, you will need to wear 'L' plates and you CAN NOT carry a pillion, even if you pass your CBT. This is because you are classed as a motorbike learner, not a qualified Moped rider. If that makes sense
