Insuring a Chinese scooter

I've had a few p.m's today from a member about insuring a Taishan for his 16 year old son so I thought I'd start this topic which might come in handy if you've just bought a Chinese scooter and don't know where to find cheap insurance.

I've been driving cars for 12 years (I'm 30 years old) and had no idea where to look for scooter insurance or roughly how much it would cost. A great place to start is on Auto Traders website, as well as all the usual car stuff they also sell motorbikes and have an insurance section where you can fill in up to eight online quote forms:

If you've got time fill them all in and then you'll get a good idea of what to expect if you decide to look further. I completed all the forms and left my phone number with one of the companies who even though they'd given me an online quote still phoned me the next day. Over the phone they gave me an even cheaper quote so I haggled and said I'd had a £60 cheaper quote from Bennets - they then proceeded to take £60 off my original quote bringing my premium down to £10 below Bennets.
So it does pay to haggle!!

If, like me, you're a car license holder but new to scooters you must remember that your no claims bonus starts from zero. While filling in some online quotes I forgot and said I had eight years NCB.

One other thing to remember is you have to tell them (they'll ask you anyway) that the scooter is a Grey Import which means it's been imported from outside Europe. I don't think it makes much difference to your premium but it's best to tell them everything.

i paid £220 from MCE this is for a 17 year old. they would not move on that figure. I was dearer for a 16 Y O.

dont bother, try lexham, i paid £185 (third party only) for my baotian bt50qt11 and i'm only 16

I got insured with ebike online insurance using the vin number for now. Ok i'm a tad older but didnt think £133 fully comp was too bad for a newbie

That's damn good!! I'm paying around the same for third party, fire & theft.

I paid £164 fully comp with 1st Quote.com, and that included the wife as a named rider too, not to mention not having any no claims. That's cos I ride another bike as well as my Baotian.

I just tried to get an online quote from MCE for my Baotian, got right to the last section where it asked for the model etc and baotian wasn't even listed :-( Total waste of time.

I will have to give them a call I think.


Does anyone know of an insurance company that has baotian listed on their online quote system? I tried another company (can't remember their name) and got right to the last section again only to find that they have only the 50cc version :-( and mine is 125cc.

can anyone beat this, the wifes just paid 77 quid third party to insure both of us 40 plus,s on a jinlun 50, hope to put our daughter on next spring, but darent think about the cost

I reccomend ebike, got 3rd party for a 16 year old for £106. But that wasnt a chinese scooter, it was a malaguti firefox, I don't think it would make a lot of differance

hey guys i had loads o trouble getting my new baotian insured i found that i couldnt get num plate until its insured and told couldnt get ins until got number plate finaly found a insurance comp that did it and was a cheap quote just thought i would tell you incase anyone else got same prob and its swinton insurance hope this helps ray

I think I ve been ripped!! I paid £283.00 for my BT125 third party fire and theft.I m in my 40s with NCB and went through Wickedquotes.com. Does any 1 think i could get cheaper?. I got loads of quotes dearer than what i ve paid but found most companies did nt have my 125 listed. Cheers for any advice.

I'm in my 40s too. I insure a Harley Davidson Superglide fully comp for £180 so I'd say you've definitely been ripped off.

Nearly always used Bennetts as they would nearly always beat any other quote.

I've got the same scoot and I pay £125 fully comp with legal cover etc...This is with Rampdale, I'm in my thirties... ;D
