Anybody else been refused insurance from Lexham because their scoots haven't been registered? I was today, they said they will no longer insure bikes using VIN or engine numbers. I thought it a bit odd. Having a nightmare trying to get reasonably priced insurance for my 2 new scoots which i purchased after selling my car thinking it would be a cheaper option. £70 for a 1.4 car and so far the cheapest i can get on the little 50cc is £150. Having second thoughts now about keeping the scoots.

Ok just phoned Swinton for a quote and got the same problem, but at least she gave me a better explanation as to why they can't do it. As they no longer do manual cover notes (some sort of new scheme which i can't remember the name of) the system won't accept anything other than a registration mark. I have to phone back tomorrow as she is going to inquire further for me. If all insurance companies join this scheme its going to be very difficult if not imposable to insure these scoots in order to register them.

I knew this was on the increase, one way round it is to take out an expensive policy, to get a covernote, get it registered, then cancel it claiming you've changed your mind, I think theres a cooling off period so they should refund most of your dosh, you are then free to take out a cheap policy with lexham. Of the twats at dvla could make the job easier, afterall dealers are free to register vehicles as they please, the dvla could adopt a system of giving out a reg no prior to registration then there would be no problems

Just seen this on an ebay listing: With our experience and professionalism, we do NOT need any documents (i.e. insurance cover note, driving licence and utility bills) from you as most other sellers would do. This means that you don't have to insure the vehicle before we are able to register and tax it or worry about your important original documents being lost if you had to post them. We will inform you of the registration number as soon as it becomes available for you to arrange insurance. So how can they do it with no insurance?

as far as I've heard,
they use their own insurance to register (like a demonstrator on a car forecourt)
this would mean you are the 2nd registered keeper

An update on the scoot reg prob. Just phoned the dealer I bought them from and they will register them through the dealership for £146, I will then become the second owner of the bikes which isn't a great prob.
