The thing is that you would have been very grateful if your bike had been stolen and the police stopped it for a check. If you're riding totally legally you have nothing to moan about. The police are only doing their job, knock them you might but if your property is stolen they will be the first people you contact. I do think its a bit silly posting on here that you are riding with a defective speedo, you were lucky they didn't spot it.

I got pulled on Friday.....had picked my stepson up from school and was taking him to the train station, passed the traffics going opposite direction, within seconds they were behind me lights flashing...... I had my helmet off(so they could see I wasn't a daft wee laddie), before the 1st one got out saying "you don't often see 2 people on one of these",asking what type of license I had, he seemed confused when I told him I was riding on my full car license, the 2nd got out(guess he was checking things on computer) telling his mate it's okay, and acknowledging me saying, he had stopped me before for my illegally small number plate........ told them I was heading for the station, they let me go straight away......... lucky I wasn't speeding......... #groovin#

Wouldn't you think they'd all understand the basic principles of the DVLA / DSA rules regarding driving mopeds on car licenses, etc ?
I agree with some principals of Brian's view but your view of the Police changes drastically when you experience some of the bad ones ..... (and unfortunately there ARE still a lot of bad police men and women).
Like the WPC that nearly drove my 68 year old Uncle of the road while doing 85mph in a 40 zone with no lights on ..... my Uncle flashed at her and she stopped and gave him 5 minutes of verbal abuse including "you should respect all police, we're authority figures!" Ha ! Nice PR !!
My Uncle made a IPCC complaint which was upheld, the WPC was given a written Disciplinary Warning, on her file for 5 years and made to apologise to my Uncle. I just hope the little hitler has slightly grown up now and and learnt HER lesson.
Then there's the copper sitting in a back street eating a Kebab, who went racing after my 9 month pregnant girlfriend of the time, with sirens and lights, went running up to the car, and really scared her, there was absolutely no need for his manner of execution.... He claimed it was because she had "cut across the last 30 yards of a Bus Lane" ....... I was not in the car - I had been standing next to the police car as it was in town and she was actually coming to pick me up ...... (but hadn't seen me and hence had driven past when the police car fancied some action).
I walked over and explained what I had saw, and that my girlfriend was 9 months pregnant and I also mentioned that I had been standing right next to him as he was munching his kebab and felt that there was no need for the inappropriate pitch of his chase and intercept (he really went wheel spinning off, and pulled in front of her quickly forcing her to stop abruptly)...
I told him on the spot that there were other witnesses over next to the point where he'd been sitting, and that I was going to go and talk to them about it now..... He said "Well theres no point in wasting your time or mine, sorry, I shouldn't have screeched off like that and shoudn't have pulled in front of her quite agressively... I was in the wrong and I admit that".
Job done, and no complaint necessary.
I've also had experience of a few apathetic Police that I've called when I've been the victim of petty crime (such as when Alloy Wheels were stolen from my car) ..... "Well, we'll fill in a report but you've got no chance of getting them back, they'll never be seen again, ou may as well just stick with steel wheels on your car in the future" ........ cheers mate!
I'm still waiting for my positive, law-upholding, Police hero experience to come along.

Brian is right that the police are the first people we look to when we are the victim of crime, but all to often we find and apathetic response at best. I have also had experience of officers not knowing the law!! It relates to CB's post, my father-in-law was rinding his Sym 50, on a full car licsence without 'L' plates, etc, etc, just like so many others on here. He was knocked off his bike by a woman pulling put of a carpark without looking. The officer who came to see him after he got out of hospital, wanted to prosecute hime for not displaying an 'L' and!! It wasn't until we showed him the DVLA website and he confirmed it with a superior, the he admitted he wasn't 100% sure of the relevant laws!!
All I can think of from that is, if that officer had 'pulled' me or anyone else, at the side of the road, how would you prove to him he was wrong! You wouldn't he'd just get all defensive and charge you anyway. Money and time wasted for no reason.
I know this is just one officer, but how many others are 'not sure' of the exact letter of the law? You are never going to know, so do your home work before you ride!

Speaking as a former cop: There are an enormous amount of traffic laws. It is tough to know them all. That does sounds like a pretty simple thing that he should have known.

A copper would say 'ignorence is no excuse in the eyes of the law' that should apply to both sides, they are payed to know it, anyway this is pretty basic stuff, or should be to a copper. This young breed of beat/town bobby are more like the yobs they are suppose to be protecting us from, why? because they could'nt even make good yobs! Its more like poacher turned game keeper, they use the rule guilty until proven innocent, often leaving it to the CPU to decide the outcome, our just bag the fixed penalty fines. And attitude problems ? No wonder they encounter so much hostility, they wind you up on purpose, I'm sure of it! Sorry, but after living in Essex I have lost any respect for our police, and as for 'hobby bobbies', unpaid part timers, and these part trained community twats, well, cardboard cut-outs have more common sence. They take anyone who can count past 5 now, the intake quality has gone down the tubes. If they get through the probationary period of 2 years then go on to specialised jobs, they seem to be the better breed, in it for the job, not the uniform.

"Hobby Bobbies" #rofl# Love it!
I was the same sort of thing here. Reserve Police Officer is the title here. We were pretty well trained to handle most situations. However, traffic law was outside of our area. We never worked alone, only along side a "certified officer" (Police Academy Graduate) as their back up. traffic law was thier bag. Worked in sleepy little villiage, had a good time doing it. However, it is a thankless job, almost always dealing with people at thier worst. After doing it part time for 3 years, I decided I did not want to do that for a living.

Dont get me wrong - its not the job, but the person and attitude. When I was in Peterborough we had a police officer dedicated to our area, long before this 'community' stuff, he was the son of a milionare family who wanted to do something 'worthwhile' be for joining the family business, his name was Mick Croft of the 'Crofts original sherry' fame, and he was brilliant, but got so disilutioned because he was stopped from doing his job by paperwork and jumped up uni grads officers who had'nt got a clue, hence he left, and others like him, and we end up with the dreggs we have now, for the most part anyway, there are some good ones, but they are well hidden by the others.

As a legal, law abiding citizen.............NO! I have no records of any sort, never had any points on my licence, never been in any trouble, so I am not biased in that respect, BUT, as only last night (while this discusion was going on) the one and only p*&%head in our area was kicking off, swearing at the local kids who had done nothing but walk past him. I phone the local police and guess what they said? 'Cant do anthing until he does some criminal damage or assult.' BUT IF he had thrown an empty tin on the floor they could have done him for £60 for littering = Instant cash!!!!!!!!!! I rest my case your honour!

(tesco carpark late at night) = closed No. of parked cars about 3
my friend literally got on the scooter then this middle aged dude comming back from the pub comes over and starts having a go for my mate not having a helmet and all kinds of crap (my helmet would not fit him)
asked him if he was a copper or somthing he said 'yes' (he so00 was not), eventually he said he works next to the police
basicly he was a complete drunk and had nothing to do with the police

Brian - I respect your view and the faith you have in our Police system in the UK but believe me your view can change very quickly and very strongly when you have negative experiences..... A Policeman (or Woman, in my experience they can be equally as unfit for the role) who misuses power or who is incompetent in a way that affects law-abiding citizens in a negative way, is a dangerour thing and I think they should be dealt with very heavily.
The problem is often that the motivation that makes some people WANT to be Police Officers is what makes them bad Police.... A craving for power, status, driving fast legally, etc.) ..... I've often said the way to get good Police Officers would be to approach "By invitation only" ...... I know it sounds crazy but it should be fit, level headed, people that respect society and see the public as THEIR BOSS - not the other way around !
The Police are there to serve US, the public and to protect us ..... their should be no "authority attitude" involved ...... unfortunately, most Police that I have come across deserved little natural respect.
