Just writing to say that I've got my CBT tomorrow at 9am so wish me luck!
Not too sure what to expect but i'm excited never the less.
I'll let you all know how I get on, at least once the CBT is done I can then sort out my insurance and then in turn register my new bike.
:-)

Is it a test just to ride 50cc's or is it so you can ride extreme machines like 125's? ;D

Ooh in that case definitely let me know how you get on as I wouldn't mind taking a CBT myself, I quite fancy getting a 125. Do you have to take a theory test as well?

The CBT allows anyone of 17 or over to ride a motorbike or scooter with L plates, no passengers and not on Motorways.
You cannot ride anything over 15BHP/125cc. If you take the CBT on a scooter you are not allowed on a geared bike.
You don't have to take a theory test, basic road signs are covered on the CBT day itself.
I've done the CBT twice myself. I can't imagine anyone failing on a scooter, the only time I have seen anyone struggling was down to mastering the gears on a motorcycle.
Just try to relax and enjoy the day. Don't think of it as a "test" as it's not really, it is simply to show you have basic knowledge, there is no specific pass or fail point so don't worry. I was hopeless at manouvering the bike through the cones both times but still got my certificate with ease. It's quite a tiring day as you will find you are concentrating a lot, but it should also be good fun, so try to relax and do take in what they are saying as it could save your life.
Have fun !

So would it be possible for me to take a CBT on a 125 scooter and when I pass only being allowed to ride 125 scooters? The thought of riding a geared bike doesn't really interest me at all.

good luck jimmy hope you enjoyed the day, its tiring as its such a long intensive day, but good fun, boosted my confidence no end and i feel really safe now, apart from the car drivers with no brake lights.
i had to do mine phil on a 50cc scooter or a 125 geared motorbike, as i'm not interested in learning the gears i choose the scooter as this was what i was going to ride anyway and if i did get a 125cc later on it too would be a twist and go scooter. so can i ride a 125cc scooter with L plates with my CBt.
thanks everyone

Alternatively you could do a 5 day direct access course which if you pass entitles you to ride any size bike without L-Plates. Day one - CBT on a 125 Days 2 to 4 - riding around on a kwacky 500 Day 5 test on the 500 This is what I did when I left the Army back in 1998 as part of my resettlement training, excuse for doing it "Well sir if all else fails at least I can get a job as a courier " It had been my intention to get a bike to go to work and back on every day so that I did not end up stuck in traffic, unfortunately the first job I got came with a company car and now I work away from home all week, so here we are nearly seven years later and I still haven't brought a bike Still one day ;D

I think a 125 scooter will be powerful enough for me but if I could take a test on a twist & go and all I could ride after the CBT was a twist & go 125 then I would be happy. Well I'm typing this at 1.05pm so Jimmy should only be a couple of hours from passing his CBT.

Hi Guys and girls, thanks for your replys1
I've completed the CBT today and everything went great (apart from the heavy rain for most of the day)
We started by going through quite alot of basic theory and the rest of the day was spent on the bikes.
I spent the day on a 125 geared yamaha bike and to be honest I had no trouble with it, very simple to use and after half an hours training the gears became second nature.
Excellent day all in all. I'll sort my insurance tomorrow and then I can get the ball rolling with getting my scooter registered, taxed etc.
cheers

I did my CBT about 18 months ago on a geared 125cc. I too, thought I'd have problems with the gears, but after an hour riding around a car park, I was fine. I've just done the theory test, and passed, for a big bike. Now I've got to do the test on a 500cc. A little nervous to say the least.
