I've got a slow puncture in my rear tyre. After closer inspection I've found a gouge on the side wall. Don't know if this is the problem but it looks like I'll be getting a new one. Has anyone replaced their tyres with anything a bit more "chunky" if so what should I go for?

Here are my tires. They are "LU-HE" brand 3.00-10 The reason they look a little beat up is a took a short (100ft) trip down a gravel road last night. Click on the pic for a better look

The chinese tyres that comes with the bikes are usually made of quite hard rubber. This makes the tyres last long, but are not so good on colder roads. Also they are not so good on water. Metzeler tyres are popular here in Sweden. They are made of softer rubber and are made for colder and more wet weather.
I myself use the chinese tyres that came with the scooter during the summer. But I change to Heidenau Snowtex for the winter. I change the tyres myself, which is a pain in the butt :-)
Scooters are a lot more common in the mediterranean countries. So most of the tyre manufacturers are targeting these people living in places where the roads are warm and sunny. Finding some all round tyres for the scandinavian weather is not so easy. I guess it's pretty much the same in the UK.

The tyre on pdg's bike would obviously need to be replaced for safety and legal reasons, but if any one gets a tread pattern puncture in a part worn but good tyre you could get an inner tube fitted, although it may state that the tyres are tubeless mine came fitted with tubes. Only down side is it will add to unsprung weight, and possibly need more balance weights, but still cheaper than throwing a good tyre away, especially if you are prone to getting punctures. You can get a tubeless tyre plugged, but I'm not keen, and I'm not sure on the law on bike tyres being repaired either.

I finally had my tyres replaced today with Continental Zippy 1's. There's a limited choice because of the size 3.00-10 I had to order them first. The tyre fitter just wanted the wheels and I had to remove the exhaust to get the rear one off - not too easy when it is hot
