I am having problems starting my scooter. The battery does not seem to be dead as the indicators work as do the lights.
The electric starter motor trys to kick in but with no sucess. For a time i was able to manually kick start the bike but now even that will not work!
I can tell my little baby wants to work and is trying hard but it just wont fire up and now i am back to hot sweaty smelly trains!
Any suggestions for me to fix this problem myself would be very much appreciated...as you can tell i know nothing about bikes i am an office guy!

If your bike is a couple of months old then, as with mine, I suspect the battery is dying, enough guts to work the kights, horn etc, but not enough to turn the starter. These o.e Chinese batteries are well famous for being crap! Either give the battery a good charge from a charger or jump leads, it will start the bike, you will find it holds a charge for perhaps a couple of hours to a day then dies again. Solution - new battery, if under warranty claim! Dont let them tel you to send the old one back, it is illegal as it is classed as hazzardous goods, do not emty it either, that is hydrochloric acid your dealing with. Next job (while you wait for the battery) is to change your plug for an NGK CR7HSA or HIX, and set your valve gaps to 0.05-0.08mm. This should put an end to the trains.

My bike is only 3months old so i'll definately try and claim a new battery under warranty. I'll also change the plug is it easy to change the valve gaps?
If i was to buy a battery myself do you know which one i should go for?
Many thanks for your help.

Andy,
My Electric Start never worked when the bike was delivered to me ...... I was the same as you - I thought that because the Indicators, etc, worked that it was not a problem with the battery.
However, the batteries fitted to our scooters are very poor in performance and in retaining high levels of charge ... I bought a UK battery from Ally1756 on this forum and installed it - my Electric Start immediately worked and I've had no problems with it since.
I can't remember the model number of the battery but Ally1756 may remember.

Where did you buy your bike? If you got it from Baotian UK or theinternetbikeshop they do honour the warranty. It also states in my handook that 'storage battery' is covered, so dont worry too much as to buying just yet. TIBS replaced mine with a known make battery to stop the risk of having to change it again, as my bike has a years warranty. Good luck then. My battery is a YTX7ABS, but Ithink yours would be a YTX 5 so check first, and expect to pay somewhere in the region of £18-25. You should be able to get it from your local motorcycle shop o.k, or eBay. I'm not sure if there is a difference in physical size but the 7 & 5 refers to amperage.

Just found the measurements for you, mine is 150cm l x 90 w x 95 deep. CHECK yours though. The key fob battery is L828 27a 12v, make a note somewhere of that too.

I only paid £500.00 for this bike so i was not expecting much more than 2yrs use out of it...cant believe its falling apart after 2000km and 3months! I think i could probably put it up for say in loot after a year and still get most of my money back or more as people are used to paying £2k for a scooter looking like mine around my way!

No just a bit frustrated thats all.
When i first bought it late feb the battery failed in the 1st week and when i recharged it the wires leading from the battery frazzled for some reason!
Internet bike shop took it back and said there was an electrical problem and replaced the battery and wiring. 2months on another battery has gone!
I doubt this would happen in a Honda or Aprillia scooter? It certainly didn't with the one i bought when i was 16...it ran like a dream!

The battery is YT5L-BS made by Yuasa.
The green light came on to say it was fully charged...kicked it a few times wud not work then left it 10mins tried again and it fired up!
Drove around the block and i can now kick start it again and again and it works...even the electric start worked twice now its dead again!
The battery is fully charged though. The bike will only kick start but i know in the morning problems kick starting will be back!
man wot is wrong with this bike its doing my head in lol
i cant find where to change the plug either.

Try undoing the connections from the soleniod to the starter, clean up the faces of the connectors, and do the same with the wire from the solenoid to battery. Check the earth connections mine are bolted to the frame underneath near the main stand, undo and clean up. The spark plug is under the cap that has a big thick black lead coming from the cylinder head. There is a guide in 'hints tips and DIY' section.
