The headlight and rear lights are fed from the lighting coil (ac generator via the voltage regulator). thats why they only work when the engine is running. The yellow wire out of the magneto is the lighting coil this volltage is AC and varies with engine speed it will probably be about 20 volts AC to the regulator the lighting switch is fed from the regulator then to the lights ther is no fuse, voltage from the reg will be about 13 volts AC. The fault will most probably be a loose connector. Behind the headlight (three screws hold this on) you will find all the connectors.

cant assume this is related
Main head light works diffrently
the main light is not on the same block connector as the side lights unlikely a single loose connection causing both problems unless its the switch or somthing
*i'd trace down from the switch if there is a block connector here then that will be the problem
but i'm thinking the problem is with the side lights and it could be panic that has made the guy think the main light is broken (trying to switch it on with the engine off )

On the BT50QT-11 the side lights only work with the engine running and are not via the battery. As they are both on the same circuit the fault must be before the light switch unless there are multiple faults the only other thing fed from this circuit is the choke if the choke operates the fault is likley to be between and the light switch and the rugulator if the choke don't work then the fault probaly lies in the lighting coil to regulator part of the circuit.

thanks for the interest people, I have bought a test light and there is no live feed to the light switch with engine running. However if i give the light switch an ignition feed I get my lights back but cant turn off the side lights!!!!!!!!!!

Do not use your lights through the ignition 12vDC unless you want a flat battery. The charging coil for the 12vDC circuit is not of sufficent size to do both its about half the capacity of the lighting coil! . The next thing to check is if there is voltage on the yellow wire on the reg/rect with the engine running.
