Hey All, Well the Scoot finally arrived, and boy does she look nice (apart from my Dogs tail at the front of the picture!) : However, there are 2 problems with the Scoot that I'm hoping you'll be able to help with:- - Although she starts first time with the Kick Start, the Electric Start doesn't work at all..... all I get is a spinny, whirry noise, not the usual starter motor sound. - The Headlamp does not work at all (either mode). At first I thought "Flat Battery", but...... the Indicators and Horn work fine, and when I press the Starter, there seems to be quote a lot of charge making the spinny, whirry noise but just no starter turning.... I had the side stand up and was holding the brakes, so it's not that either. I'm going to check all over the forum for answers but in the meantime if you know what could be causing these two problems, please let me know. THANKS !! Davros

Just all the usual things to check I'm afraid, headlight connector behind bulb, wire connectors behind front panel, and for the starter: check operation of starter bendix [remove transmission cover]. Best of luck, nice pic

Brian,
I've seen a few posts mentioning "wiggling the connectors behind the front panel" but what front panel ?
Sorry, if I'm being thick but I can't see a way in to get behind the bulb !
Also, the Tax Disc holder came in the documentation and there's not even a hint as to where it's supposed to attach!
Can you believe I paid extra dosh to get this bike "fully PDI'd and ready to drive away" ........ yeah right.
thanks,

To gain access to the bulb there is one screw at the front under the headlight ajuster and two on the grey bit near the horn button and near the starter button, remove these then pres lightly near the top of the speedo and the headlight shroud should come away. The front panel is the big panel "got a badge on it" one screw at the front, four screws behind. You do know the headlight only works with the engine running!

My tax disc holder I attached to the left rear yellow reflector, used a lock nut to make it stay on

DavRos,
Firstly congratulations on doing your homework before the bike came, a very refreshing attitude!
If the starter makes the high pitched whirr but doesn't engage it's probably just a sticking bendix, Ally did a good photo writeup on it somewhere. Try it lots of times first, mine only engaged 50% of the time when new.
The front panel is the large glossy black one with the 'Baotian badge, held with four screws and fragile plastic tabs, almost impossible to remove without damage. Slide up and out after removing screws. Under this panel are loads of plugs that come undone. You can then get access to the headlamp cowl if you need to (2 screws), the bulb contacts may be suspect & need a bit of bending. Be aware the headlamp only works with the engine running.
My mate bolted his tax disc holder to the rear left reflector mount. Stuff the tax holder, go for a ride!
Enjoy!

It sounds as if you need to charge your battery, either by battery charger or jump start the bike and it will charge. Even if you leave it for a while it may charge itself, as Brian says your lights will come on only with the engine running. Good luck on your new scoot anyway.

Thanks for the help and tips guys - much appreciated!
Yeah I knew that the headlamp only comes on with the engine running... Well I gave the wires a wiggle behind the front panel (thanks Brian) and hey hey, the headlamp is now working!
So it's just this Electric Start problem..... I'm beginning to suspect it's just a flat battery so will give her a run after tea and see if she get's any charge into her.
ON THE PLUS SIDE:
All thanks so this great site, I've already de-restricted her (pink wire and the carb adjustments) and the great news is it worked, she still starts after my tampering !!!
I also had the dreaded brass bolt in the top of the carb cover, so that's been removed too.
Not done the spark plug yet as I'll probably wait until I change the oil.
One quick question on getting a new (decent non-Chinese) battery.... are they pretty standard ? ie... If I go to Halfords and say I'm after a Scooter Batter will that do, or are there many different sizes and should I take the current battery with me ?
Thanks again for the great help - it's great to finally have the Scooter and she does look gorgeous!

Cheers folks..... Here's some slightly better pics....... Not ridden her yet as she's as approximately a thimble full of petrol in her .... so will have to pop out in the car with the Petrol Can, then take her for her first spin once the rush hour settles down #woohoo# ... if anyone finds a good place to get a decent battery for a BT50QT-9, do let us know!

Cheers Ally - I'm just looking at some pics you done on freeing up a jammed bendix as I fear that may be my problem..... I have given the Scoot a good run out tonight but the electric start is still just whirring (but kick start works fine).
I'm getting a motorbike battery charger tomorrow so will still give the battery a good charge but there seems to be loads of charge, it just whirrs and whirrs but doesn't engage....
My first "scoot about" in 14 years was fun !! The Scoot goes really well, I already de-restricted it so it's accelerating really quite briskly and she got up to just over 35mph on the Speedo on a straight, but I backed off as clearly she needs running in.
One thing I did notice is a "Flap" of rubber that hangs precariously near to the back wheel - it's kept on by 4 teeny weeny prestud notches, but has already fell of twice while I was cleaning the bike ....
Anyone know what this flap thing does and can I take it off ?
Thanks!
