My name is Gavin, and I am an alchohol... Sorry, wrong group I have been looking through the info on this site, and found some very useful information on my search, in preparation for buying a cheap scooter. I hope to purchase a Baotian 50 off Ebay soon.

Welcome to the fun house Gavin, it's good to have you here!! If you buy a Baotian you'll find this forum invaluable. Are you bidding on any or just looking as there's a few nice examples on eBay for around £499 if that's not too much but keep in mind I only paid £371 for my Taishan Commuter.

Thanks Phil.
I am just researching, (and window shopping), at the moment. Selecting the right supplier seems a big headache, I am mechanically minded, so maintenance shouldn't be a problem. If buying, I would be aiming at £380 - £450, so the price you paid seems very good.
Who supplied your scooter, presumably it was via Ebay, and did you have any delivery problems?

I bought mine from Bike Mart Direct in Lincoln via eBay, had no problems at all with the delivery and it was a lot faster than I expected. Registering it, on the other hand, was a bit of a nightmare which you can read about in the Trouble With Certificate of Conformity topic in the General Scooter Chat section.

Thanks again Phil I now remember reading your post about trying to license it, and how bikemart offered to do it. I live near Nottingham, and I actually rang bikemart up after reading your comments, but they were waiting for a shipment arriving, so they are one option. The other option is pitbike4all, who are about 25 miles from me, they seem to be reputable from the comments on the forum. I saw from the same thread, that someone had managed to register one at the DVLA Nottingham, so it looks like that groundwork has been done.

Yeah it seems very hit & miss as to whether your local DVLA are crap or not - mine unfortunately were crap. If a company are about 25 miles away then I'd say try your best to buy from them. Bike Mart Direct are about 140 miles from me which didn't make things easy when I went to pick up my documents - I was so fed up in the 4 weeks it took to register the bike that had they of been just up the road they would have had the bike back and I would have had my money back. In a way I'm glad I kept calm as all worked out well in the end.

Is it neccesary to register at the local office, or can the forms be posted anywhere?

Is it neccesary to register at the local office, or can the forms be posted anywhere? You can post them to Swansea but imagine how slow it'll be if any problems arise?

Iwas thinking maybe posting them to an office that a member on here has used.

Iwas thinking maybe posting them to an office that a member on here has used. Oh I see. Probably not a bad idea but wouldn't they think it strange that you're posting the stuff to an office which isn't the nearest?

Hi Gavin
Pitbike4all, AKA Cannon2 i've mentioned elsewhere on this forum. Think pitbike4all is their ebay username and Cannon2 the actual company, well thats what my invoice said anyway. I had no probs with mine and DVLA Glasgow were scarily simple, guess i've just been lucky.

I phoned pitbike4all earlier today, to see if I could strike a good deal, but he didn't want to move on the Ebay price. I am trying to get someone to fetch the bike for me, to try and cut down the £90 delivery charge, as it's only 25 miles away. I have been quoted £50 - £60 from a 'Man with a Transit van', will the bike and crate fit into a Transit?

Yeah the bike will easily fit into a Transit. Just imagine the scooter wrapped in carboard with a wooden pallet on the bottom and that's the size. With my scooter all I had to do was fit the mirrors and battery.

Thanks Phil I have put the car up for sale this weekend, (only an old banger), so I should be going ahead with the purchase early next week if the car sells. I am now nearly under £600 for the scooter, delivery, and registration/tax, so it is getting better

You can't complain at £600 for a brand spanking new scooter. With mine I paid £371 for the scoot, £100 delivery and £58 for reg & tax giving a grand total of £529. Have you bought a helmet & gloves yet? Mine both came from eBay (brand new) £50 for the helmet and a tenner for the gloves.

I've seen some reasonable (for 35mph) helmets on Ebay for about £35 inc. delivery, but not ordered anything yet. For gloves, a pair of marigolds will do for summer :-)
