I dont know where exactly to measure. From James' photo guide it looks like between the valve & the arm. But using the kick start I moved the cam shaft around slowly & repeatedly but did not see a time where both are closed. It seems that one is always at least part way open. But I dont really know what I am looking at anyway . Had the marks lined up, but probably wasnt doing it right . [sigh] E-mailed my mechanic friend waiting to hear back from him. If you dont hear from me in a while, its because I went broke driving my Jeep & had to turn off my internet (Kidding ;D) I will let you know how I make out. Chris

The head cover should be fine with only three bolts holding it on. It's only there to stop muck getting into the camshaft, and to stop oil leaking out. So long as no oil is leaking your fine. Thanks Billy! I don't feel quite so stupid now

Thanks Billy! I don't feel quite so stupid now If you get a small screwdriver, and use it like a chisel, with a hammer, the remaining part of the bolt will probably come out pretty easily.

What kind of engine is it 2 or 4 stroke. I have the QMB139 4 stroke CVT. Might want to check and see if gas is somehow getting into your oil (bad rings or piston). If gas is getting in your air filter and the carb is fine it could be a bad petcock valve located under the gas tank. As far as setting the valves don't try getting them both closed at the same time, just do one at a time. Take out you spark-plug and remove valve cover and use your kick-start lever to rotate engine until one is closed then set. Repeat.

As far as the broken bolt, go down to an ACE or local hardware store get some good bolts and an extractor kit.

********UPDATE******** Got a new wrench & got the vavles adjusted. Intake clearance was too large. Adjusted that. No difference-still wont start. I have a nice blue spark. The carb is working. There is gas in the tank. Checking the trouble-shooting guide, seem to point toward 2 possible probslems. 1 Low or no compression: Seems unlikely with only 600 miles on the clock. 2 spark timing is off. Mechanic friend thinks this one is the problem. thinking that it is sparking early while the intake valve is still open. (Causing the blowback problem I have been having) Brought my CDI to work today. (Yes I am at work) Going to borrow a multi-meter from the tech shop & check it out after work. I think I may finally be close to the problem.
