my bt50qt-9 has been making some bad rattling noises and i think it could be the crank i was told its unlikely but when i had a look it was a little loose dont know if there is meant to be movement in it and that wheel behind the variater is very loose

Check your valve clearances.

Check your valve clearances. Troy #stickpoke# valves are nothing to do with this problem don't think it's the crank you're looking at??? the loose wheel (starter bendix?)behind the variator is meant to be loose, is the nut holding the variator tight? there should'nt be any movement there....... .................#sprint#

very unlikely to be your crank shaft, maybe your cam shaft?

Camshaft is under the rocker cover in the top end of the engine... its what opens and closes the valves... its driven by a chain from the crank.
Sounds like ya variator has come loose by the final out come, this would explain the lose of drive as belt would be loose, noise from all the parts shaking loose, smoke from slipping belt and then the fact all the starters chewed up!

managed to get that variater nut off stripped most of it down but the only thing that seems to be broke is a carbon like stick that was next to that chain that opens the cams and another thing that comes out of the top with a spring going through it thats held in the top of the engine by two bolts if you understood that could you tell me what they are many thanks

That carbon like stick is your timing chain guide, and the spring thing is your rocker arms and valves.

Sounds like your timing chain tensioner has failed, the stick thing may be the chain guide.
Have a look at the exploded diagrams in the manuals (on this site), thay should clarify it.
No big deal to replace compared to the crank, I'd change the oil tho' may be lots of bits in your crankcase!

The part that goes thro' the top of the engine with a ratchet on it & a big nut on the end & a spring is the timing chain tensioner.

This is your timing chain tensoiner (Red Arrow) Click pic to enlarge Inside this there is the 'notched metal rod with a spring round it' This is what has broken. The parts assemble like this. (part number 2 is the tensioner) web.hi-tronic.se/asiamotor/en/bt50qt9/products.asp?id=4
