ADS 218: I have had a Taishan 50 scooter for about a month and it seems to get slower and slower. It is very slow on hills and when on the stand and revving it seems sluggish and does not rev cleanly. It is now down to 20 mph and has only done 250 miles! I have cleaned out the petrol tank ,carb and pipes. Changed the spark plug. Altered the mixture and checked both fuel filters. Help please as i am new to scooters and like to sort out the problem myself

not really, if the vavle gaps were only slightly out then it would harm performance, they wouldn't hit because the timing is still the same, it's just that the vavles are not as open as long.

The clearences between the valve stem and the rocker arm should be 0.05mm for both the inlet and exhaust.
The service manual tells you how to check and set them

kool strange for them to be the same usually the exhaust valve needs a bigger gap as its hotter and expands more

they are little wieghts that sit in the gearing system and if they are cheap ones they can wear out, look on www.beedspeed.com for some rollers, any weight between 4.7g and 6.0g is fine for these bikes, the lighter they are the more revs and acceleration youll get, the standard is 6.0g if im correct? ally

higher gram rollers = more top end speed lower gram rollers = more power rpm loose top end what ally said but they sit in the variator there is no gearing on these scoots, you can get many weights rollers but between 4 and 8 grams is the best anything more will be to low rpm rollers that come with a 50cc baotain are usually 6.5g some have had 8.5g tho they can get worn quite easy allthough the stock rollers are normally okay with mine when they wore out i could hear a rattling sound to remove the variator nut you will need a inpact wrench see the guide on this forum for replacing rollers quite easy really, i paniced a bit when i had to put it back together the first time but its all in the manual its simple job www.scooter-assassins.com/sitebuilder/images/dio_ct_vari_and_cam_02_eb-287x210.jpgwww.scooter-assassins.com/sitebuilder/images/dio_roller_weights_ct_01-455x342.jpgYou will see flat sort of like cut out parts appearing on worn rollers, they are all ment to be round i'd replace the stock rollers with 5.5 gram malossi rollers that way your scoot will have good mix of more power and more speed if you do buy new rollers they must be 16x13mm i'd get malossi if possible

I have been told it could well be a carb problem. It ran fine for the first 4/5 miles then appeared to slow down and stop. I pulled over and tried starting it about 3 times b4 it started and as and from then on has not been as smooth or fast

It's important to remember that heavier weights will not always increase top speed. Different sized weights are only supposed to change the points at which the scooter shifts from a low gear to a slower gear. With a properly sized variator, the top speed of a scoots with differently wieghted rollers should be the same, only different acceleration. These chinese variators are not sized correctly for our engines. The engine is too underpowered and wont push the plates together if you don't get the same top speed with all the rollers

should have really said what ally said but they sit in the variator there is no REAL gearing on these scoots There is definitely gearing on these scoots, it is in the final drive of the rear hub. Though I haven't counted mine yet, drive ratios are usually about 9:1 or so. If you took the transmission cover off you would notice that the clutch spins at a different ratio than the wheel because of the gearing. The number of times the clutch drum spins per wheel revolution is the gears final ratio.
