Does any one know how to put the flywheel back on once youve taken off?? I put it back on and the spark advance timeing is off, i also found 2 small bits of steel that seem to go in the groove on the shaft but am un sure how to put it back together properley so its allighned accuratley. As a result the timing is allways off. Pics bellow might help you see what im talking about, Ive also noticed the flywheel moves slightly when i tighten up the nut so the metal bits must also lock the flywheel in a certan place. Are theese metal bits fixable?? Are other metal "bits" avalable??

That small piece of metal is called a woodruff key. It supposed to fit in that groove, and is designed to hold the flywheel in the correct position when spinning. It appears your woodruff key is broken, these aren't easily available, when i broke mine i had to actually make a new one How did yours break?

make a new one??? do i just get any bit of iorn and try make it fit??
I think it broke because the nut wasn't on tight enough and it broke it that way, the scooter slowly lost power as it slowly movEd out of place(thats what i think).. when i used a puller to get it off those 2 small bits were on the floor.

Make a new key from a small piece of soft metal if possible. Because its easier to grind, file and sand softer metal

Have a look on ebay, under 'woodruff key' or 'rocket key'. a rocket key is the same as a woodruff key, but it has a step in it is used to advance your timing a few degrees to get better performance.

Yeah thanks ill try get a rocket key and let you know how it goes, who knows it may become another cheap essential peformance upgrade , In the mean time I did just make my own one out of a washer, was really simple as the washer fits nicely into the groove and is the perfect width too(groove is the same width as those square nuts that are everewhere). Al i did was hack saw off a bit then filed it of untill it fit properly, it ends up quite small, semms to be doing the job at the moment, and finally my scooter is working, too bad its raining #crying# red bit in first image is around the size i grinded the bit down to would have taken a pic of the key but its back together and running so im not touching it!!!

woodruff keys are made from aluminium and are like a 'fuse' or weak link so as not to twist the crankshaft if the rest of the drive jams up. They will shear off and throw the timing out, and so stop the engine.

Perhaps aluminium keys are just lawnmower engines! Sorry about that! (It's me age you see) sob.

They are made of a soft metal to do just as you said shear and not damage the keyway. So using just any metal is a real bad Ideal key stock can be bought.

In the states the auto parts store have different size woodruff keys but never the correct size but close. I just got one close with a halfmoon shape and filed it down till it fit...It was soft metal. Washer looked like good idea though. Guess I'll never know what an exact size would look like or how it would fit. Mine was tight. Wished I'd have seen the pics first so I would have known it didn't just happen to me.

Woodruff keys are used a lot in outboard motors. Nearly all outboard motors have one or two in them.. So if your looking for a woodruff key try doing a search in marine engines ot outboard motors... Just a thought.. it might help someone in the future when looking for a part. regards alan ;D
