Nicked this of another website, hope it's of use.

Licence requirements

You can ride a moped (50cc or less) from 16 years old with a compulsory basic training (CBT) licence and a provisional moped licence. You must show L-plates and cannot carry passengers. 50cc bikes are restricted to go no faster than 30mph. Please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information.

Hold a full UK car drivers licence - passed after the 1st February 2001?

With a full UK car drivers licence you can ride a bike of up to 50cc without L-Plates and carry a pillion passenger. However a CBT is required. Please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information.

If you wish to ride a bike up to 125cc you will require a CBT, please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information. It is required that you use an L-Plate on completion. You will not be able to carry a pillion until you complete the next stage of the test. CBT is valid for 2 years and is required to do a full motorcycle test.

For bikes above 125cc you will require a full bike licence please contact the Driving Standards Agency (DVLA) for more information.

Part of me while reading that was hoping it'll say I don't need to take a CBT to ride a 125 but I must have L plates. I'd have been a happy bunny if that was the case. :D

The trouble with that is it it gives very little incentive for riders to improve their riding.

If a rider knows he/she has to take a full motorcycle test, (and hopefully pass), or take, and pay for another CBT course every 2 years, he/she is more likely to take the full test, and usually gain better riding skills as they prepare for taking the test.

So us lot will probably be better riders than you lot ;)

If it's not broken, don't fix it, but take it apart anyway, then at least you know what it looked like before it fell to pieces :)

Hey guys, I'm new to this forum but I'm thinking about getting a Baotian BT50QT-11 as i have just passed my CBT and i was wondering? it doesn't actually say in that first post whether or not you can ride a 125cc when you are 17 on only a CBT???

Can someone out there clear it up cause i cant seem to find anyone that really knows.

Thanks for any help. ;D

Hello Dingbat!! :-[

As far as I know if you're 17 you can ride a 125 after passing a CBT but I think you have to have L plates on.
Whatever the case you can definitely ride a 125 after a CBT. 8-)

No, you need to taker a cbt to ride anything over 50cc or 30 miles an hour, no matter what your age.

The answer to your question is YES. As you have already taken a CBT to ride at 16, you don't need to take another to ride a 125 at 17, after all it is the same CBT and you have already done it!

You do need to display 'L' plates though.

The only thing stopping you from riding a 125 right now is your age and insurance policy. >:(

don't remember the dates, but if you've passed your driving test recently, your cbt stays valid as long as your license.....

top post is a bit wrong....if you passed your driving test after feb 2001, you do need L plate, including 50s (i think)and can't carry a passenger............ #sprint#
